Long time - no internet

I haven’t had access to internet the whole trip until today.  We are in Port au Prince at the FH Haiti Guesthouse which has internet and it very nice.  I will do a proper update after we visit the clinics and also put up some pictures.  We have felt your prayers of protection in this country that is influenced by Voodoo.  Each night we have had to go to sleep to the drums and chats and a few screams.  Psalm 91 has been our nightly reminder.

Also keep Liz and the trekkers in your prayers as they are into day 2 of the TREK for Hope 2010 - “50 for 50″

Team prepares for Haiti

Haiti Distruction

It’s only a couple days till the Food for the Hungry team heads for Haiti.  We are from all over the country and yet we all have one thought in mind - to reflect the GLORY of GOD in all we do while we are in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  We had a nice surprise handed to us today.  We heard from the organizer of a conference in Santa Domingo which has as one of it’s speakers Dr. John Piper.  Although we will miss the conference we have been invited to attend the worship service on Sunday AM.  Dr. Piper will be the speaker and it will be in English.  Many may know that Dr. Piper is taking an 8 month sabbatical from all duties except international conferences - so this is a unique opportunity to hear him speak.

What a great way to start our time in Haiti and the DR!

Back in the USA

What a great adventure.  No hitches on the way back and now I’m in Detroit waiting for my flight to Denver.  So much to reflect on that I’m not sure where to start.  I’ll probably write a few more blogs as I go through my notes and pictures.  Lots of memories that are burned deep into my memory banks.  New places, new foods, new friends and a new mind set on the work that Food for the Hungry is doing in Ethiopia and Sudan.  The challenges they face to accomplish the work set before them is inspiring to me.  They never seem to hit a dead end - there’s always a way and the way is relying on the power of God.  More later…

The revenge of the Nile Palace

To good to be true

I have felt great during this trip…until last night.  I started feeling bad about 4pm and by 7pm I was feverish and in bed.  I had a rough night but now I’m feeling much better.  What happen was our last night in Malakal we went to the Nile Palace for dinner and they served fruit at the end of the meal.  It was so tempting to have fruit that I decided to partake - that was the mistake as the fruit would have been rinsed off using tap water.  I knew better but I ate it anyway.  So last night I paid for it.  I’m just relaxing today and we head to the airport at 3pm to begin the journey home.

One day of stomach problems at the end of the trip isn’t all that bad.  I’m glad it didn’t hit at another time.  So, note to self, “Don’t eat apple wedges when traveling.”

Happy Birthday to Liz!

Happy Birthday to Liz!

Today is a special day for my beautiful wife…it’s her Birthday and each year she seems to get younger and younger [in my eyes].  I wish I could celebrate with her but since I can’t…Call her and wish her a happy birthday [or text her would be fine].  She’s made me what I am today and believe me - that was not an easy task.

I just got an AMEN from Sara and Leena on that last comment :)

George in Juba

Back in Paradise…Hotel that is

Of course you can’t go to an airport without something going wrong.  When I went to check into the UN flight to Juba they asked to see my FH ID card…which I’ve never had.  The guy wouldn’t back down at first.  I told him that obviously I had gotten to Malakal without one - but he brushed that off with, “MISTAKE”  We had to send Abebe back to FH/Sudan to create a letter that explained that I did in fact work for FH.  So here we are back in Juba for an evening and a day and then tomorrow at 5pm we start the trip back.

The staff and recipients have made this trip wonderful.  The conditions are not ideal by any means but the hard working staff and the smiling faces would make me stay if I could. I can’t stay because I would just be in the way at this point but maybe someday soon I can figure out how to actually be helpful in the field.
